MILLSBORO, Del. - After spending nearly an entire month away from team competition, the No. 10 Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks were finally able to hit the lanes Friday and made a statement by going 4-1 while defeating three Top-10 teams on day one of the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic in Millsboro, Delaware.
SFA (12-4) bowled five, four-game total pin matches and defeated No. 4 Vanderbilt (864-753), No. 9 Valparaiso (826-759), No. 11 Norfolk State (732-731) and Morgan State (681-671). The Ladyjacks lone loss came to No. 6 Central Missouri, 859-782.
The Hawk Classic features an 18-team field that may be the best of any event in the nation as it features 13 of the nation's top 20 teams. It would have been a full 20, but due to a couple of late dropouts the field is set with two less programs. It also includes three more programs receiving notes in the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) poll.
SFA was originally scheduled to bowl at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Jamboree two weeks ago in Elmwood Park, N.J. but were forced to withdraw due to Hurricane Sandy.
