Junior Antonia Kolovou recorded a dominating 6-0, 6-0, victory at No. 6 six singles but it was the only victory the Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team recorded against No. 5 Baylor Wednesday afternoon. The match, which was originally schedule to be played at Baylor, had to be moved to an indoor facility in Ennis, Texas.
"Baylor is an NCAA Final Four team and has been undefeated in our region for nearly a decade so we knew we were in for a big challenge," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "But we gave them all that they could handle and I'm extremely proud of our effort. We were a few games from going 3-3 and sending it to doubles, which is our strongest point. I am pleased with how hard we fought and again, very proud that we stood toe to toe with one of the best programs in the country and didn't back down."
Trailing 2-0 after Nos. 1-2 singles, freshman Elena Kordolaimi found herself locked in a battle at the No. 3 spot. After dropping the first set, the reigning Southland Player of the Week battled back to take the second set, 6-3, but Kordolaimi was unable to hold the momentum dropping the third set. In similar fashion, senior Alina Shazko forced a third set before bowing out to one of the country's top 80 players, Jordan Saanford, 6-0. 5-7, 7-5.
Junior Antonia Kolovou got SFA on the scoreboard with her straight-set shutout of Baylor's Brittany Ridenour, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. The `Jacks' Julia Lorca also forced a third set at No. 5 singles but came up just short to BU's Megan Horter, 2-6, 6-0, 6-0.
The `Jacks return action Friday when they travel to Denton, Texas to take on North Texas. SFA will follow that up with a match against Colorado Saturday in Houston.
