NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Antonia Kolovou has been added to the Stephen F. Austin women's tennis roster announced head coach Patrick Sullivan Wednesday morning. The addition brings the 'Jacks' roster to nine players.
"Antonia is someone who we have had our eye on for several years now," said Sullivan. "Both Stephanie and I have gotten to see her play and know her well while she dominated at the junior college level right down the road in Tyler. She was very well-coached by John Peterson and Dash Connell at TJC and comes to us highly recommended as a tough competitor and great teammate. Antonia is a great addition for a young team that is in need of veteran leadership and we're all very excited to have her join us as part of the SFA tennis family."
Kolovou comes to Nacogdoches from one of the premier junior college programs in the country, guiding Tyler Junior College to back-to-back NJCAA Championships. A two-time first-team NJCAA All-American, Kolovou teamed with current Texas A&M letterwinner Sun Wen to take the 2010 NJCAA doubles title. The duo finished second in the country this past season.
Kolovou was ranked as high as No. 3 in singles, and No. 1 in doubles play during the 2011 season. This coming on the heals of her freshman campaign that saw her earn a No. 6 national ranking in singles and fourth nationally in doubles play.
A NJCAA Flight 2 finalist in 2010, Kolovou won the Flight 3 championship last season. A three-time quarterfinalist at Greece's ITF Corfu Open, Kolovou is already familiar with the Southland Conference. She helped TJC record a 4-3 victory against Sam Houston State by securing wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles in a head-to-head matchup last season.
The SFA tennis team opens its 2012 spring schedule Thursday when it travels to Boca Raton, Fla., to take on Florida Atlantic. The match is slated to begin at noon, and will be the first day in a stretch of six days of competition for the 'Jacks.
