
Michael Smith Wins State Public Links Championship

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Senior golfer Michael Smith won the 2011 State Public Links Championship Sunday at Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio, Texas. Smith defeated three current collegiate golfers and one former collegiate player for the title.
Smith carded a 69 to qualify as the 12 seed in the 32-player tournament. Smith faced Wichita State's Tyler Gann in the opening round and defeated him 1 up. He advanced to the semifinals by defeating Houston's Curtis Reed, 3 & 1. Smith advanced to the finals by recording a win over former UT-Tyler standout Matthew Stephens, 4 & 3. Smith's victory came Sunday with a victory over Sam Houston State's Tyler McKay, 3 & 2. Former Lumberjack standout Brian Grossman also competed in the tournament.
The field consisted primarily of collegiate golfers as well as some of the top amateurs in the state.
