NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin Director of Athletics Robert Hill was named the Under Armour AD of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) on Monday. In all, 28 athletic directors were recognized with four geographic regions separated into seven categories.
Hill completed his sixth year as AD at Stephen F. Austin in 2010-11 and was named the West AD of the Year in the Football Championship Subdivision along with Charlie Cobb (Appalachian State), Ron Prettyman (Indiana State) and Joe Sterrett (Lehigh).
In his time as Director of Athletics, SFA teams have won 22 Southland Conference titles and have made NCAA championship appearances in football, men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball and indoor/outdoor track.
SFA claimed its second consecutive Southland Conference men's all-sport trophy in 2011 highlighted by conference championships in football and men's outdoor track. The football title marked the first time in SFA history for back-to-back championships while the track title was the first SLC outdoor championship for the men's track program. The baseball team made their first appearance in the SLC tournament championship after a second place finish and broke the school record for most wins in a season with 37.
SFA women's athletics also made history by winning SLC titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track becoming the first SLC school to win titles in all three track championships in the same year.
The past season was a successful follow up to SFA receiving the 2010 Southland Conference Commissioner's Cup for overall athletic excellence while also winning both the men's and women's all-sport trophies. SFA is only the second conference member to have won all three awards in the same year.
Hill is also active on the national scene where he is currently serving on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee and Football Issues Committee. He also represents the Southland Conference on the FCS Athletic Directors Association executive committee.
He has been with the university's athletic department for 24 years overall, beginning as the school's sports information director before moving into a position as assistant athletic director in 1990 and eventually being named athletic director in 2005. Prior to SFA, Hill spent 17 years in broadcasting, including serving as the long-time play-by-play voice of the Lumberjacks.
The award will be presented during the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics 46th annual convention in Orlando, Florida on Saturday, June 18 at the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon.
