McLeroy Guides SFA to Fifth-Place Finish

FORT WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Mitchell McLeroy just missed a share of the 2011 Southland Conference individual title Wednesday after firing a one-under par 215 (73-66-76) on the par-72, 7,304-yard Waterchase Golf Course to lead the Lumberjacks to a fifth-place finish. Stephen F. Austin carded a 296-287-301 - 885 for the three-day tournament in Fort Worth.
"Mitchell really felt confident going in that he could win the individual title," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "I think he really proved to the rest of the league that he has the talent to get the job done. He is only a sophomore, and unfortunately, I think he got a little rattled down the stretch, which is typical for younger players."
All five Lumberjacks finished the day within a stroke of each other. Senior Kyle Robbins and junior Stetson McMillan each fired a three-over 75 Wednesday morning to finish tournament play tied for 17th overall with a five-over par 221.
Senior Richard Wilkenfeld carded a 78-75-76 - 229 to place tied for 34th overall. Longview freshman Jason Fiscus put together his strongest round of the tournament on the final day, but was unable to overcome an 81 in the second round of action. Fiscus fired a four-over par 76 Wednesday to finish 41st overall.
"I think our guys came into the tournament playing with confidence," said Schroeder. "We had some momentum heading into the week after our last three outings, but we were unable to keep that going through all three rounds. I thought our guys really came into the week with the right frame of mind, but you have to give Texas-Arlington credit. It is hard to beat a team on its home course and they really played well."
