SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team was swept Saturday in a Southland Conference doubleheader at Texas State. The Ladyjacks dropped Game 1, 2-1, and suffered a 7-5 defeat in the second contest.
The losses move SFA to 4-17 on the year with a 1-4 record in league play. Texas State moves to 9-12 overall and 2-3 in the Southland.
A two-run first inning was all Chandler Hall needed, as she tossed a one-hitter in the opener for a 2-1 Bobcat win.
Texas State got a two-out infield single in the first that scored two runs. Both runners reached base by being hit with pitches.
SFA got a run back in the third. Charlotte Singleton drew a full-count walk to lead off. Krista Hallmark then moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Two at-bats later, Lauren Luetge pulled a single through the right side to score Singleton.
While Monika Covington kept the Bobcats off the board after the first, SFA was unable to get anything going after Luetge's hit. The Ladyjacks put two on in the fourth with Elizabeth Arana reaching base on an error and Bethany Brown drawing a walk, but SFA failed to get a runner on base in the final three frames.
Covington (1-10) lost her fifth one-run decision of the year. She worked six full innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
SFA outhit the Bobcats in Game 2, but Texas State got some timely hitting to score six of its seven runs with two outs in a 7-5 win.
Elizabeth Arana homered to lead off the second and tie the score at one. Texas State countered with two runs in the third. SFA then put up a run in the fourth when Lacy Liles singled with the bases loaded to score Luetge, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 6-2 with three more runs in the bottom half. The Ladyjacks cut the deficit in half with two runs in the fifth. Brown led off with a walk then scored on a double by Amber Price. An error and a walk loaded the bases for Jessica Arana, who lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Price to make it a 6-4 game.
The Bobcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. After neither team scored in the sixth, SFA was down to its last chance. Brown and Price doubled in consecutive at-bats to lead off the seventh, then Brown scored from third on a fly ball to center by Luetge. But SFA stranded Price at third when the game ended on an infield pop-up and a ground ball.
Price went 2-for-4 with her seventh and eighth doubles of the season to lead SFA at the plate. Brown, Luetge, Elizabeth Arana and Liles all hit safely once with each driving in a run.
Carlie Thomas (3-6) started and took the loss after working 3.2 innings. She was touched for five earned runs on four hits and five walks. Angela White worked 2.1 innings in relief and gave up a run on four hits and a walk.
The series concludes Sunday with a single game scheduled to start at noon.
