LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team traveled to McNeese State to challenge the Cowgirls in the Southland Opener and dominated the Cowgirls, 5-2, improving their record to 9-0 on the season.
After defaulting at No. 3 doubles , SFA recorded victories at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to take the point.
Going into singles play, sophomore Paola Montuenga fought hard after losing a close first set, 4-6, and came back to dominate a win for SFA. She recorded a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 over McNeese State's Ralitsa Pirdopska. Following Montuenga's victory, the Ladyjacks won the next three consecutive singles matches. The Cowgirls lone victories were a win at No. 1 singles and a default at No. 6.
"We had a tough task today and we played the match short-handed, but the girls showed a lot of grit and found a way to win," head coach Patrick Sullivan said. "This is the kind of match that builds toughness and brings a team together, and I couldn't be more proud of this team than I am right now."
The Ladyjacks return to action looking to extending their record to 10, when they host UT Tyler, Saturday at 5 p.m. from Schlief Tennis Complex.
