NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team overpowered Nicholls, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Schlief Tennis Complex in Nacogdoches, Texas. After having their nine-match win streak snapped earlier this season, the Ladyjacks have now won their last two matches and are 11-1 (.917) on the season, and 3-1 (.750) in Southland Conference play.
"Both teams were feeling the effects of tough, emotional matches yesterday," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "I think our girls just fought harder, and wanted the victory more. We are now going to enjoy some time off to recover, and be ready to go next week."
The Ladyjacks won the doubles point, but battled back from a 5-4 deficit at both Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. The duo of junior Alina Shazhko and sophomore Paola Montuenga posted an 8-6 win at the No. 1 spot, while the tandem of freshman Ksenia Berestetska and sophomore Alice Pacaut battled back to score the final four points of the match.
Pacaut handed the Ladyjacks a quick 2-0 lead when she dispensed of Nicholls' Marina Ljoshevska, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 singles. Shazhko tacked on another point for SFA shortly thereafter knocking of Florina Nosca, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Shazhko's win would prove to be the deciding factor as Nicholls was forced to forfeit No. 6 singles.
The Ladyjacks finished the day with two more singles victories coming at Nos. 2 and 3 singles. Nicholls' lone point of the match came at No. 4 singles where senior Andreea Enica forced a third set but fell short in tough match, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Saturday when they host UALR. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m. from the Schlief Tennis Complex.
