BESSEMER, Ala. - Stephen F. Austin knocked off No. 4 Nebraska and Alabama A&M Sunday on the final day of the Holiday Collegiate Classic to finish fourth in the 12-team tournament.
SFA won a best-of-seven baker match with Alabama A&M to start the day. The Ladyjacks won in four straight games, including a dominant 250-168 verdict in the third game.
After the morning matches, the teams were seeded for a two-round playoff. SFA went in as the No. 6 seed and was paired with fifth-seeded Nebraska. The match went seven games with the Ladyjacks scoring a 235-139 win in the decisive Game 7. SFA opened with a 189-155 win. Nebraska countered wins in the second and third games, then the Ladyjacks evened things up with a 186-171 win in the fourth. The Huskers took Game 5, then SFA broke 200 in each of the last two games to win the match.
That victory put the Ladyjacks in the third-place match against Sam Houston State. The Bearkats took four straight to end SFA's tournament with a loss.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action March 18 for the Music City Classic in Smyrna, Tenn.
