The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team made history Tuesday afternoon receiving its first national ranking in program history. The Ladyjacks are currently ranked 71st in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. In addition to receiving their first ranking in school history, SFA also becomes the first Southland Conference school to appear in the national poll this season.
"The girls have worked hard and it's great that they have been recognized for their effort," said first-year Ladyjack head coach Patrick Sullivan. "At the same time we realize that we are only a quarter into our season, and even though we can feel good about the strong start, we still have a long way to go until the finish line."
The Ladyjacks have jumped out to a 5-0 start to the 2011 season, and have recorded impressive performances within those victories. SFA has surrendered a total of four points all season, and started the year with consecutive shutout victories.
The Ladyjacks were so dominant in the opening two weeks of the season that they received back-to-back Southland Conference Player of the Week honors. Junior Alina Shazhko earned player of the week honors in the opening week, while sophomore Paola Montuenga received it the following week.
The Ladyjacks will step on the court as a nationally ranked team for the first time Thursday when they host Prairie View A&M. The match against Prairie View is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from the Schlief Tennis Complex.
