NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Junior Tammara Marion scored 25 points to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 96-50 victory over Texas State (9-16/4-8 SLC) Saturday afternoon at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Marion was one of four Ladyjacks to finish the day in double figures.
SFA never trailed in the contest building a 21-point first-half lead, due in large part to a strong defensive effort. Despite shooting 50 percent in the first half, the Bobcats turned the ball over 18 times which SFA converted into 14 points. The Ladyjacks held Texas State to 20 field goal attempts in the opening half, while SFA knocked down 17 field goals in the first 20 minutes. Senior Ebony Alexander buried a three with 17 seconds remaining in the half to give SFA a 22-point lead, 45-23 heading into the locker room.
While the Bobcat offense was struggling Marion accounted for nearly 50 percent of the Ladyjacks' offense in the first 20 minutes scoring 20 of her game-high 25 points in the opening half. She opened the game connecting on eight of her first 12 attempts, including a 4-of-6 effort from beyond the arc.
Texas State entered the game as the Southland Conference's top rebounding squad, but SFA carried the fight to the Bobcats outrebounding their guests, 43-29, including 23 offensive rebounds. The Ladyjacks finished the contest with a 23-5 advantage in second chance points.
Junior Courtney Conwright added 15 points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc, while senior Ebony Alexander added 12 points. Junior Amina Sawyer finished the game with 10 points and three blocks. Senior Decreasha Goodner chipped in seven and led all players with 10 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday when they travel to Beaumont, Texas, to take on Lamar. The defending co-conference champions will tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center, and it will be their only regular-season meeting.
