
Cardinals Top Ladyjacks

BEAUMONT, Texas - Senior Jordan Ford scored a team-high 16 points and went over the 1,000-point mark for her career, but the Lamar Cardinals never trailed and picked up a 79-63 win over Stephen F. Austin on senior night Wednesday at the Montagne Center.
The Cardinals (22-5, 11-2 SLC) got double-doubles from both Kalis Loyd and Trashanna Smith and put four players in double figures. They led by as much as 21 in the second half. Still, SFA (10-16, 7-6 SLC) finished with four players in double figures, led by Ford's 16 points and five rebounds.
Tammara Marion and Decreasha Goodner each finished with 11 points and Amina Sawyer added 10 points, five rebounds and five steals; however, SFA was just 3-for-18 from beyond arc on the evening and 10-for-17 from the free throw line.
Ford entered the night needing just seven points to eclipse the 1,000-point mark and did so in the first half on a 17-foot jumper from the left corner, as her 10 first-half points helped keep the Ladyjacks within strikng distance for the majority of the first half. But Lamar got eight points from Loyd in a 14-4 run to close the half, including a buzzer-beating lay-in.
The Cardinals shot 58 percent from the field in the first period for a 44-28 lead, but SFA got five quick points from Goodner early on to cut the lead back to 11; however, the Cards went on an 8-2 run immediately after that to push the lead back to 17 and never looked back.
Loyd finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead all scrorers, while Smith totaled 14 points and 12 boards.
The Ladyjacks next take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. from William R. Johnson Coliseum.
