LAFAYETTE, La. - Elizabeth Arana went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Carlie Thomas threw a three-hit shutout Saturday as SFA took a 6-0 win over Tennessee State in the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns Invitational. The win avenged Friday's loss to the Tigers and followed a 7-0 defeat by the host Cajuns Saturday afternoon.
SFA improves to 2-8 on the year and 2-2 on the weekend.
The Ladyjacks gave Thomas the lead with a run in the bottom of the third. Nicole Wooten drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Arana. Wooten scored when Cadie Weaver reached on a fielder's choice, but Arana was caught between third and home for the second out. Lauren Luetge then got a single to put Weaver on third, but Tennessee State escaped further damage with a strikeout.
SFA padded its lead with another run in the fourth. Bethany Brown led off with a walk, then stole second and third. She came home on a ground-out by Charlotte Singleton.
Two innings later, the Ladyjacks put the game away with four runs in the sixth. Brown drew another leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Singleton. A wild pitch advanced Brown to third, then she came home on a double to left by Lacy Liles. Liles moved up a station on another wild pitch and scored on a base knock by Amber Price. Wooten followed with an infield single, then Arana doubled to the gap in left-center, scoring Price from second. Wooten would eventually score on a wild pitch to set the final count.
Thomas (2-3) held the Tigers to singles in the first, third and sixth innings, with five walks and an error constituting the only other baserunners of the game. She struck out three in picking up her second win of the year.
Luetge went 2-for-3. Amber Price was 2-for-4 with a run scored and one driven in. Wooten, Weaver and Liles each hit safely once, as SFA finished with 11 base knocks, one shy of the season high.
In Saturday's first game, Ashley Brignac held the Ladyjacks to three hits in a 7-0 shutout.
The Ragin' Cajuns put up single runs in each of the first three innings, and a three-run homer by Taryn Broussard all but put the game away in the fifth. Louisiana-Lafayette then added a final run in the seventh.
Price, Luetge and Krista Hallmark each had singles, but all three hits came in different innings and the Ladyjacks failed to move a runner past second base in the game.
Senior Monika Covington (0-4) started and pitched all seven innings for SFA. She was charged with seven earned runs on nine hits and a walk. Covington put up a season-high 10 strikeouts.
The Ladyjacks will wrap up play in the Ragin' Cajun Invitational Sunday with a game against Maine. The contest is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
