NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Senior punter Drew Nelson has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District team announced CoSIDA officials in a release Thursday afternoon. A semifinalist for the 2011 Campbell Trophy, it marks the second consecutive season that Nelson has received national recognition for his work in the classroom.
One of the nation's most consistent punters over the course of his career, Nelson enters Saturday's contest against Southeastern Louisiana with the third-best career punt average in school history. Owner of the sixth-best punt in SFA history, Nelson has twice been named second-team All-Southland Conference, and is a three-time all-league performer. Last season, Nelson was named to the FCS ADA Academic All-Star and Academic All-SLC teams, and is a candidate for the same honors again this season.
Athletes must be a starter, or significant reserve, play in at least 50 percent of all competitions and maintain a 3.3 cumulative grade point average to be nominated for the honor.
Nelson will be one of 13 seniors recognized Saturday prior to the 'Jacks kickoff against Southeastern Louisiana. The game against the Lions is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
