'Jacks Have Ground to Make Up in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's golf team opened the Lone Star Invite with a rare Sunday morning start. The Lumberjacks fired a solid 297 in the opening round of the tournament which consists of five team's ranked among the nation's top 44, and two teams ranked among the country's top 25. The tightly packed field has 13 of the 15 teams separated by 18 strokes.
The 'Jacks placed their top four within two strokes of each other led by senior Michael Smith. One of three seniors on the squad, Smith carded a one-over 73 to finished tied for 31st overall on the Briggs Ranch par 72, 7,253-yard course.
Freshman Jeff Hageman was only a stroke back of Smith with his two-over 74 to finish the day tied for 45th. Junior Mitchell McLeroy and freshman Blake Pugh each shot a three-over par 75 to finish the round tied for 59th. Freshman Chase Webb finished the day 89th with an opening-round 82.
The Lumberjacks return action Monday morning for the second round of play. The teams are slated to tee off at 8:30 a.m.
