CHICAGO, Ill. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team closed out the 2010 season ranked ninth according to the Gridiron Power Index (GPI), released earlier this week. The GPI is the ranking used by the NCAA Division I FCS, and a top indicator of at-large playoff selection.
The 'Jacks' class of 2010 became the first in program history to record back-to-back conference titles by posting a 9-3 record in 2010. The only Southland Conference school in the GPI's top 25, SFA finished the season ranked eighth nationally according to the Sports Network Top 25 Poll. It marks the second consecutive season SFA has recorded a top 10 national ranking.
The Lumberjacks closed out the season by making a return trip to the NCAA FCS Playoffs where they hosted 2009 National Champion Villanova in the opening round.
SFA will kick off the 2011 season Thursday, Sept. 1, when they host McMurry at 6 p.m., from Homer Bryce Stadium.
