LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - For the second straight day, Stephen F. Austin went 2-3 at the Arkansas State Mid-Winter Classic on Saturday. The Ladyjacks opened the day with consecutive wins against Texas Southern and Alabama State but dropped three straight against Alabama A&M, Valparaiso and Maryland Eastern Shore.
The performance allowed SFA to hold its position in the tournament, and the Ladyjacks will go into Sunday's final day seeded eighth overall in total pinfall.
"We didn't get the kind of showing we wanted out of today," SFA head coach Laura Cramer said. "I thought we could have done better, but we still have the chance to finish strong with a good performance tomorrow."
Saturday's matches were all scored using the standard team format. SFA opened with a 929-860 win over Texas Southern. Dustie Hammond led the way with a 224, and Nicole Parkhurst rolled a 199.
In the second match, the Ladyjacks cruised past Alabama State, 881-685, behind another strong game from Hammond. This time she bowled a 218, complemented by Sierra Gibbons' 182.
The Ladyjacks then suffered a 951-824 loss against Alabama A&M, followed by a 920-845 defeat at the hands of Valparaiso. Parkhurst rolled a 191 against Alabama A&M and posted a team-best 212 against Valpo. Ashli Rosenkranz had a 197 against Alabama A&M.
Maryland Eastern Shore finished off SFA's day with a sound defeat.
The Ladyjacks will wrap up competition Sunday, competing in a seeded bracket.
