NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For the second consecutive season Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack head football coach J.C. Harper is strong candidate for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award. Harper's team enters the off week with a 3-1 (.750) overall record and a No. 6 national ranking. SFA posted a similar record after four games last season.
The voting for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year honor comes in three phases, and the first phase is fan voting. Fans wishing to select Coach Harper can do so by clicking here, or by clicking on the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year link on the SFA Athletics web site. The other two phases of the selection process consist of an evaluation process, and the finalist fan voting and committee voting.
The annual recipient of the award receives $50,000 for his charitable causes, and an additional $20,000 will be donated to the alumni association of each winner's school. In addition, the winners are recognized within a permanent exhibit at the College Football Hall of Fame.
Harper guided SFA to a Southland Conference title, and the second round of the playoffs last season. The Lumberjacks posted a 10-3 record to win their first league title since the 1999 season. Following the season, Harper finished second for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award in one of the closest ballots in award history. SFA finished the season ranked among the nation's top 10 in all major polls.
SFA returns to action Saturday, Oct. 9, when they travel to Lake Charles, La., to face McNeese State. The game is slated to kick off at 7 p.m. from Cowboy Stadium, and will serve as the 'Jacks' conference opener.
