DENTON, Texas - Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team competed in the Mean Green Invitational in Denton this past weekend, winning a total of 20 matches in their season-opening tournament.
Doubles action proved to be a great start for the Ladyjacks. Junior Alina Shazhko and sophomore Paola Montuenga advanced to the semifinals of Flight A doubles, where they fell in a tight match, 8-6, to Northwestern State. In Flight C doubles, seniors Meaghan Ocanas and Andreea Enica lost their first round match to North Texas' Paula Dinuta and Amy Joubert, but bounced back to dominate the consolation draw, defeating UTSA in the finals.
After several more doubles victories, the Ladyjacks began to bring home wins in singles competition. Shazhko lost her first match to UNT, but finished with a solid victory to win the Flight A consolation draw. Freshman Ksenia Berestetska won a tight first match against Sam Houston State's Nadia Dubyanskaya in Flight B singles, but fell short in her second match.
Montuenga and sophomore Alice Pacaut each made it to the semifinals of their respective draws, bringing home five total wins for SFA. Ocanas and Enica closed out the tournament by meeting each other in the Flight C consolation finals round, finishing with four more wins for SFA.
"Even though the hot weather made playing conditions in Denton very challenging, we won every three-setter we played," first-year head coach Patrick Sullivan said. "I believe we are the only team not to have the same sort of fatigue withdraw, which we are really proud of."
The Ladyjacks return to action Friday, Oct. 1-3 when they host the SFA Invitational at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
