NACOGDOCHES, Texas - With the first week of fall camp nearly in the books, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team is gearing up for its first scrimmage. The Southland Conference preseason favorite will give fans their first look Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium. The scrimmage is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
"We've had pretty good competition at every position," said head coach J.C. Harper. "We want to have the ability to play a lot of players, so we are really looking for consistency. This is a tough time of year because your dealing with classes, practice, and the heat and guys tired. We're looking for those guys with the maturity and ability who can go out there and help us win some games."
The SFA coaching staff will be looking to lock up quite a few key positions in the final few days leading up to the season. The 'Jacks graduated their top three receivers, two of the better offensive linemen in the league, it's top two running backs, an all-conference safety and their two starting defensive ends including All-American Tim Knicky.
"The most important thing, in the first scrimmage, is to come out of it healthy," said Harper. "You also want to see if the things you're working on in practice is getting through to your players. It is a long-term process, and goes beyond what we see in just this one scrimmage."
Saturday's scrimmage will be the first of two scheduled scrimmages before the season opener at Texas A&M. The game against the Aggies is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Kyle Field.
