PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - For a second consecutive season, senior linebacker Jabara Williams has been named to the Buck Buchanan Award Preseason Watch list. Williams is one of six linebackers receiving consideration for the award, which is given annually to the NCAA FCS level's top defensive player.
One of the Southland Conference's leading tacklers, Williams recorded another outstanding season for the 'Jacks in 2009. He finished second on the team with 87 tackles, including 6.5 tackles for losses and one sack. A two-time All-American, Williams helped lead a resurgent SFA defense that was one of the toughest in the nation.
Williams, who led the conference in tackles following his sophomore season, was the catalyst for a defense that was one of the most improved in the country. The Lumberjacks finished the season ranked sixth in the nation in sacks, and 18th in tackles for a loss on their way to a Southland Conference title.
Williams is the second Lumberjack to be named to an award watch list during the offseason. SFA quarterback Jeremy Moses was named to the Walter Payton Award Watch list earlier this season.
SFA kicks off the defense of their 2009 SLC crown Saturday, Sept. 4, when they travel to College Station, Texas. The game against the Aggies is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Kyle Field.
