NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team hosted a blood drive in cooperation with the East Texas Blood Center Friday in the Champions' Room of the athletic fieldhouse.
The blood drive took place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. Members of the Lumberjack football team, as well as coaches and administrators stopped by to donate. In addition to the football team, coaches and athletes from several other squads also donated.
"A donation from one person saves three people," said Krissi Reeves, a recruiter for the Blood Center of East Texas. "We need 1,000 units per day to supply the East Texas region. The plasma is used for burn victims, the platelets go to those diagnosed with cancer and for open-heart surgeries and the red blood cells are used for trauma victims."
The SFA athletics department is one of just 50 blood drives per month that are hosted by the Blood Center of East Texas. The center supplies the Nacogdoches and Angelina region, and its surrounding areas.
"The donations that are made to the Blood Center of East Texas stay in this region," said Connie Weaver, a recruiter for the East Texas Blood Center. "That really helps when people know they are assisting others in their community."
