FRISCO, Texas - The Southland Conference announced its 2010 all-conference teams on Wednesday with Ladyjack freshman Paola Montuenga being named to the second team in her first season of play.
Just one year ago Alina Shazkho took home the SLC Freshman of the Year honor, and Montuenga's nod gives SFA an all-conference honoree for the second straight season. It is the first time that the Ladyjacks have had back-to-back seasons with a player on the all-conference roster since Meredith Watson in 2001 and Lisa Osborn in 2000.
A freshman from Vendone, France, Montuenga held down the No. 3 singles spot this season, going 12-5 on the year and playing all but two of her matches on the season in the No. 3 slot. She dropped her first two matches of the season before winning 12 of her final 15 matches to close the year, finishing 12-5 overall and 8-3 in SLC play.
Montuenga won her only match of the year when she played up in the lineup, defeating ULM's Lena Satge on March 22. She also managed to take 10 of her 12 wins on the season in straight sets.
Montuenga and the Ladyjacks picked up a win on the final weekend of the season to earn its third consecutive berth in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament. SFA will go in as the No. 8 seed and take on undefeated Northwestern State in the first round of the tournament at the HEB Tennis Complex in Corpus Christi on Friday.
