ARLINGTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team was shut out for the fourth consecutive game Sunday, dropping a 4-0 decision in the series finale at UT Arlington. The three-game Southland Conference sweep is the first suffered by SFA since the Mavericks took all three games in Nacogdoches in last year's meeting.
The loss drops SFA to 20-12 on the year and 13-5 in Southland play, while UTA improves to 22-17 overall with a 13-7 record in league action.
The Mavericks wrapped up the sweep with a big fourth inning. UTA banged out four hits in the frame and scored all four of their runs in the fourth, all with two outs. Brittany Washington and Courtney Zink wrapped singles around a walk issued to Kelsey Kaiser to load the bases.
Rebecca Collom then came through with a two-run single, advancing to second on the throw with Zink moving to third. Cara Hulme got a base knock through the left side in the next at-bat, bringing both runners across.
SFA managed just four hits for the game. Two of them came in the first, when Kendal Harper and Jessica Arana got back-to-back singles, but the runners were stranded at second and third with two consecutive outs.
Brittany Caruthers doubled in the second and singled in the seventh, proving the only other offense for SFA.
Ladyjack starter Monika Covington (8-7) started and pitched four complete before giving way to Angela White. Covington was charged with four earned runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts. White didn't allow a hit and issued one free pass with a pair of strikeouts in two innings.
SFA will try to get back on track with four games at home this week. The Ladyjacks host Centenary Wednesday in a 4 p.m. contest, then take on Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game series, starting with a doubleheader, on Saturday.
