SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks were dominant rolling to a 77-61 win over UTSA Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center San Antonio. The win moves SFA to 18-9 on the season, and 13-3 in Southland Conference play, and hands the Ladyjacks a share of the 2010 SLC title, their 15th in program history.
The Ladyjack defense caused all sorts of problems for UTSA in the opening half. SFA held the `Runners to 3-of-their-first-14, and UTSA never seemed to find the mark. The Roadrunners finished the half 7-of-24 (.292). SFA also forced their hosts into 16 first-half turnovers, which SFA converted into 11 points. The Ladyjacks also held an advantage on the glass outrebounding UTSA, 26-16, in the opening 20 minutes. The Ladyjacks were 12-of-33 (.364) in the first half.
SFA pushed its lead to as many as 21 points in the second half, and UTSA was unable to mount a serious challenge. The Ladyjacks shot 46 percent in the second half to pull away from their hosts. SFA finished the game 31-of-67 (.463), while holding the `Runners to 39 percent. The Ladyjacks were also dominant on the glass outrebounding UTSA, 52-29.
The Ladyjacks led by as many as 12 in the opening half, but UTSA cut the lead back to nine right before the intermission. UTSA's Whitney York buried a three to cut the lead to 31-22 heading into the intermission.
The Ladyjacks will open up Southland Conference play Tuesday against Northwestern State at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. Game time is yet to be determined.
