SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin split a series-opening doubleheader at UTSA Saturday, winning the first game, 3-1, and dropping a 6-3 decision in the second contest.
With the split, SFA moves to 8-7 overall with a 4-1 record in Southland play.
After going hitless for the first four innings in Game 1, SFA got a three-run bomb from Amber Price to take a 3-1 victory.
The Roadrunners put together two of the three hits Monika Covington allowed in the first inning to go ahead, 1-0. But the SFA ace retired UTSA in order in the second and third, then worked around a leadoff walk and a single in the bottom of the fourth before finally getting some run support in the top of the fifth.
Kayla Gutowski led off the inning with a triple. She would be cut down at the plate on a fielder's choice by Ashley Struchtemeyer. Karissa Jones then drew a walk, setting the table for Price. She took the 2-1 offering over the wall in center field for a three-run homer.
That was all the offense Covington would need. The only baserunner UTSA would muster over the final three innings was a hit batsman in the sixth, and Covington struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.
Covington improves to 2-4 with the win. She gave up just three hits and a walk in seven innings with a season-high 11 strikeouts.
Gutowsi's triple and Price's homer were the only hits SFA put up in the game, marking the first time this season for the Ladyjacks to win a game in which the opponent out-hit them.
The Ladyjacks put up 11 hits in Game 2, but gave up 12 hits to UTS in a 6-3 loss.
SFA put up a run in the first inning. Kendal Harper led off with a triple, then scored on a two-out double by Briana Bishop.
The Roadrunners answered with two runs on a pair of hits and an error in the bottom half, then added another unearned run on two hits and an error in the second.
The Ladyjacks tied the score in the third, again with Harper starting a rally. She led off with an infield single then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Arana. After an infield pop-up, Bishop crushed a two-run homer to left field, evening the score at 3-3.
The score stayed tied until the bottom of the fifth. The Roadrunners got a leadoff single then a base knock and a double to put up two runs. UTSA added a run in the sixth on another RBI double.
SFA went quietly in the sixth but wasted three hits in the seventh inning, leaving three runners on base.
Angela White (5-3) started and took the loss, her first in five starts. She was charged with three earned runs on 10 hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Lauren Luetge worked the final inning and a third, giving up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout.
Bishop finished 4-for-4 with three RBI to lead SFA at the plate. Harper was 2-for-4, and Arana, Kayla Gutowski, Struchtemeyer, Jones and Price each hit safely once.
The series will conclude Sunday with a single game set to start at noon.
