NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team received two impressive pitching performances Saturday two win both games of a doubleheader over Northwestern State. The Ladyjacks improved to 13-7 on the season, and 7-1 in Southland Conference play.
SFA's Monika Covington flirted with a no-hitter in the opening game. The Ladyjacks gave Covington an early lead when Kayla Gutowski singled home Kendal Harper in the bottom of the first. Although SFA would go on to add three more runs, the first-inning score would be more than enough for Covington who carried the no-hitter into the seventh inning.
Covington got the first two batters she faced in the seventh to ground out, but then she ran into trouble. Northwestern State's Samantha Roberts broke up the no-hit bid with a single to center. The Demons followed with two more singles before Covington got Ashleigh Kuhn to fly out to right field to end the game.
Covington pitched seven scoreless inning surrendering only three hits and a walk, while striking out four. The victory moves Covington to 5-4 on the season. Kylie Roos took the loss for Northwestern State, going four innings and surrendering three runs on four hits.
Amber Price finished the game 1-for-2, with the hit being a two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kendall Harper finished the game 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Angela White was put in the tough position of trying to follow up Covington's pitching gem, but White was just as tough in her start. The Ladyjacks scored two in the bottom of the second, and White did the rest.
White (7-3) recorded her fifth complete game of the season. She surrendered only two hits, while striking out four Demon batters.
White got into a little hot water in the seven inning after hitting a batter, and an error gave Northwestern State runners at first and second with no outs. After the Ladyjacks were able to knock out the lead runner on a fielder's choice, White made short work of the next two Demons getting Ashlee England on strikes, and Ashleigh Kuhn to fly out to center field. Brooke Boening took the loss for Northwestern State.
The heart of the Ladyjacks' order got the job done in the second game. SFA's 2-6 hitters were 6-for-14 with two doubles, and a stolen base. Brittany Caruthers finished the game 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored.
The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday when they host Northwestern State at 1 p.m. from the SFA Softball Complex.
