THIBODAUX, La. - Senior Whitney Cormier became the 24th Ladyjack in program history to score 1,000-career points as Stephen F. Austin squeaked by Nicholls, 75-69, Wednesday evening in Thibodaux. The victory moves SFA to 11-8 overall and 6-2 in Southland Conference play, while the Colonels remain winless in league play.
Nicholls (3-17/0-8 SLC) didn't look like a team that has been searching for its first win. After falling behind 16 points at halftime, a scrappy Colonel team battled their way back into the game in the second half. Led by Rickshanda Bickham's 33 points Nicholls outscored SFA by 10 in the second half. Although Nicholls held a slim margin on the glass, including 15 offensive boards, the Ladyjacks had too much firepower.
Led by sophomore Tammara Marion's career-high 20 points, and Cormier's 16, SFA was able to stop the Nicholls' rally. The Ladyjacks were 27-of-65 (.415) from the floor, while outscoring Nicholls 30-18 in the paint.
Bickham had a big night for the Colonels, but the SFA pressure held everyone else at bay. Bickham was the only Colonel in double figures. Junior Decreasha Goodner was in the starting lineup for classmate Jordan Ford, and finished the game with nine points and five rebounds. Although not at 100 percent, Ford came off the bench to add nine.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they host Lamar. The game against the Lady Cardinals is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
