NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjack tennis team got four singles wins from its 3-thru-6 players on Saturday, which proved to be just enough to get past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-3, in the opening match of Southland Conference play on Saturday at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
The Ladyjacks (5-1, 1-0 SLC) avenged a 4-3 loss to the Islanders (4-3, 1-1 SLC) last season with the win and opened up league play with a win for the second consecutive season.
It was only the second time this season that the Ladyjacks saw its top two players - Roxana Enica and Alina Shazkho - fall in both singles and doubles play; however, Paola Muntuenaga, Tatiana Smolnikova, Alice Pacaut and Sanjana Kapur each picked up singles wins to aid the Ladyjack cause and help the team to a winning start in SLC play.
Muntuenga had to battle to three sets in No. 3 singles before finally getting past Bianca Discordia, (4-6, 7-6, 6-1), while Smolnikova had no problem with Adrienne Kovacs in No. 4 singles as she disposed of Kovacs in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).
Like Muntuenga, Pacaut had to go the distance as well in No. 5 singles before finally getting by LeAnne Mascall (6-3, 2-6, 7-5). Sanjana Kapur tallied the final Ladyjack point of the day in No. 6 singles play, disposing of Megan Harless in straight sets (6-3, 7-6).
Those points were necessary as the Islanders opened up the match by taking the doubles point, despite a No. 2 doubles win by Muntuenga and Pacaut over Discordia and Mascall (8-6)
SFA can run its win streak to five matches on Sunday if it can get past UTSA as they take on the Roadrunners at 11:00 a.m. at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
