NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack golf team is traveling to Broken Arrow, Okla., Monday to compete in the Bob Hurley Auto ORU Shootout. The second-year team has found it tough in their two tournaments prior to this one, and is ready play their game starting Monday at 8 a.m.
There are going to be 16 teams at the shootout - Oral Roberts, Texas-Pan America, Southern Utah, Sam Houston State, UTEP, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Northern Iowa, UMKC, Southern Illinois, Lamar, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Southern Nazarene, McLennan CC, SMU, Arkansas State, and Stephen F. Austin.
"This is probably going to be one of our toughest tournaments of the season," head coach Trey Schroeder said. "The girl's team is still young and we are still progressing, but having some great potential gives me and the team high hopes."
According to Schroeder, an area the team is focusing on knocking off one or two shots per round per player.
"We seem to throw away unnecessary shots," said Schroeder. "If we improve that week to week, by the end of the year, we will have learned enough to compete in the conference."
The Lumberjack golf team also hits the road this next week traveling to Tahoe, Nev., to compete in the Wolfpack Classic. Prior to this tournament, the 'Jacks have competed in two tournaments finishing fourth in the past one. The team tees off at 8 a.m. Monday and Tuesday.
Including Stephen F. Austin, there are going to be 14 teams at the tournament - San Diego, Loyola Marymount, UAB, Wyoming, San Francisco, Washington State, Utah State, Hawaii, Nevada, Idaho, Portland, and UC Santa Barbara.
"This is a pretty big deal, lots of West Coast teams are going to be there, and that means tough competition," said Schroeder.
"The team plays great in practice, so if we can transfer that play to tournament play we will do great," said Schroeder. "Our main two things we need to work on are some relaxation exercises in between rounds and focus on the shot at hand."
