Lumberjacks Leap to 4th at ORU Shootout

TULSA, Okla. - On the final day of the ORU Shootout, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team moved up three spots to finish in fourth overall among 12-team field. The Lumberjacks shot a third-round score of 299, finishing the tournament with a 306-316-299 - 921.
Junior Kyle Robbins another top-10 finish with a final score of 222 (75-73-74). Robbins score placed him in the hunt for the individual title, finishing second overall. Freshman Mitchell McLeroy shot a five-over 77 in the final round, tying for 11th place with a 229 (75-77-77). Only two strokes off McLeroy pace, classmate Austin Green tied for 16th place with a three-round score of 77-79-75 - 231. Senior Josh Irving shot an 81 in the final round, posting a final score of 247 (79-87-81).
After missing the first two rounds of play due to an injury, junior Michael Smith gave the 'Jacks an additional lift posting a third-round score of 73.
"The loss of Michael (Smith) really hurt us," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "He was unable to play the first two rounds due to an injury but he came back today. I was also really pleased with how our freshman played. I thought they did a really good job, they started out slow but really bounced back in the final round.
"This was definitely not the start to the season we had hoped for. We were really confident coming into the season, but my freshmen really showed something today. It was also good to see Kyle (Robbins) fighting for the tournament title. I believe had Michael been healthy, he would have been in the mix as well," added Schroeder.
The Lumberjacks tee off next on Monday, Oct. 5, 2009 in Ruston, La. at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Invitational.
