NACOGDOCHES, Texas - High school standouts Jason Fiscus, Austin Green and Mitchell McLeroy have signed National Letters of Intent to play golf and continue their education at Stephen F. Austin head coach Trey Schroeder announced Wednesday morning. The incoming trio adds immediate depth the 'Jacks roster which lost one of its top three players to graduation this season, and will lose another of its top five following the 2009-10 season.
"I am very excited with the talent of our 2009 class," said Schroeder. "Each one of these guys has shown the mental toughness and attitude that it takes to win. Austin, Mitchell, and Jason all have a chance to make an impact right away. They have all shown that they can compete and win at the junior level, and that is the attitude and confidence that is needed to play well in college."
One of the top golfers in East Texas, Fiscus advanced to the UIL Class 3A State Championships all four seasons. He is a three-time all-state selection who garnered first-team honors as a junior and a senior. The 2007 NTPGA Player of the Year, Fiscus won the district and regional title as a junior, and advanced to the state championships where he recorded a runner-up finish. He capped his junior season by winning the Starburst Junior Golf Classic, and being named the 2008 East Texas Golfer of the Year. A three-time team captain, Fiscus finished his prep career with a sixth-place finish at the 3A state championships.
Green is an athlete who has left a paper trail of success throughout his career. One of the top-50 golfers in the state, Green has won six Texas Junior Golf Tour events. He is a three-time all-district selection who earned all-region honors as a sophomore and junior. Considered one of the top-10 recruits in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Green was a 2008 district champion.
A Mansfield, Texas native, McElroy is a team MVP who brings a 74 stroke average to Nacogdoches. A first-team all-district selection, McLeroy finished third at the Texas Cup shooting an even par (284). McLeroy is the third member of this singing class who comes to SFA as a former all-region selection.
"We have been very young over the last two years, but now we have some seasoned veterans who can step up and take this team to the next level," said Schroeder. "Qualifying will be extremely competitive next year and I expect our play in tournaments to be much more consistent because of it. Having lost only one senior, my expectations will be very high for the 2009-10 season. I will set some lofty goals at the start of the fall that we will work hard to accomplish."
