HOLLISTER, Mo. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team shot a 308 in the opening round of the Branson Creek Invitational Monday, and enter the final round fifth overall. The tournament, which is being hosted by Missouri State at the Branson Creek Golf Course, was delayed Monday morning due inclement weather.
The Lumberjacks enter the final round only three strokes out of second place, and only seven strokes back of team leader Western Illinois (301). SFA placed three players in the overall top 10 led by sophomore Michael Smith who shot a team-low 75 tied to be tied for eighth overall. Sophomore Kyle Robbins and senior Chad Spencer each recorded a five-over par 76 to end the day in a five-way tie for 10th.
Junior Matt Oates and freshman Stetson McMillan struggled in the cold, windy conditions. Oates finished the day tied for 43rd with an 81, while McMillian is tied for 51st two strokes back of Oates.
The teams completed 27 holes in the first day of competition, but only 18 holes were accepted. The Lumberjacks return to the course Tuesday to close out the tournament beginning at 11 a.m. Due to the expected low temperatures Tuesday teams will only play nine holes of the par 71, 7036-yard course.
