KERRVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team struggled early Monday morning in the opening round of the Southland Conference Championships and are currently sixth heading into Tuesday's second round. SFA shot an 18-over par 306, eight strokes back of fifth-place Texas-San Antonio. Texas-Arlington is first after shooting a four-under 284 on the 7,103-yard, par 72 Club at Comanche Trace course.
The Lumberjacks have two players currently among the field's overall top 10 in sophomore Michael Smith and senior Chad Spencer. He shot an even par on the front nine before recording two bogeys and a birdie to finish the day one over (73).
Spencer struggled on the front nine, but battled back to close out the day with three birdies on his last six holes. He also finished the day one-over par. Both Smith and Spencer enter Tuesday's round tied for eighth overall.
Sophomore Kyle Robbins shot a five-over 77 and is currently tied for 32nd overall. Junior Josh Irving and freshman Stetson McMillan will have some work to do Tuesday as both athletes struggled throughout the day. Irving finished the day tied for 42nd with an 11-over 83, while McMillan carded an 84. He is currently tied for 44th overall.
The Lumberjacks return to action for the second round of the SLC Championships Tuesday morning. The championships will conclude Wednesday morning with the final round of 18 holes.
