Ladyjacks Defeat Colonels

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjack tennis team picked up its second conference win of the season on Sunday, getting a 4-3 win over Nicholls at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
The win avenges a 5-2 loss at the hands of Colonels in Thibodaux, La., last season and moves SFA to 2-1 in league play early on this year.
Once again it was Roxana Enica and Alina Shazkho leading the way for SFA, teaming up to win their fifth straight doubles match taking both No. 1 and No. 2 singles points as well.
Despite the 8-1 doubles win by Enica and Shazkho over Florina Nosca and Sanja Stanojcic, the Colonels still managed to score the doubles point and grab the early lead in the match with wins in both the No. 2 and No. 3 slots.
But SFA did what it had to in pulling out the team win, taking four of the six singles points to secure the match. Both Enica and Shazkho got in trouble early, dropping the first set in each singles match, but rallied to win in three sets. Enica's win came over Nosca (4-6, 6-4, 6-1), while Shazkho's came over Natalie Zomora (2-6, 6-0, 6-2). Shazkho has now won five of her last six singles matches.
The other two points came from No. 4 and No. 6 singles with Tatina Smolnikova and Jamie Williams coming through. Smolnikova won her third singles match in her last five tries, needing just straight sets to defeat Ciska Wouters (6-4, 6-3). Williams moved to 2-0 in conference singles play with a straight-set win of her own over Nicole September (6-1, 6-3).
SFA will look for its third conference win on Wednesday when they travel to Huntsville to battle Sam Houston at 2:00 p.m. They return home for matches with Texas State and UTA starting March 28.
