NACOGDOCHES, Texas - After nearly three weeks without taking the court, the SFA women's tennis team was back in action this past weekend, falling in a pair of matches to Texas State and Texas-Arlington at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
SFA (3-10, 2-3 SLC) had not played a match since March 8 as matches with Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston were both postponed during that time.
The Ladyjacks nearly pulled out a win on Saturday against Texas State, falling 4-3 to the Bobcats. SFA picked up singles wins from Alina Shazkho, Sanjana Kapur and Gabriela Gadeva but Texas State pulled out the doubles point with a pair of wins in what proved to be the match's deciding factor.
Shazkho made her first appearance of the year in the No. 1 singles slot in the match, picking up a win over Andrea Giraldo (5,7, 7-6, ret.). She also paired up with Roxana Enica for a doubles win as well, defeating Lainy Chafitz and Giraldo 8-6 in No. 1 doubles.
Kapur's win came in No. 3 singles, defeating Nyssa Peele (6-2, 6-0), while Gadeva earned a No. 4 singles win over Chaftiz (6-3, 7-6).
SFA then had a tough task on its hands on Sunday when it took on one of the league favorites, UTA, falling by a 7-0 count. The Lady Mavs, who sport an 8-0 record in league play, only dropped one set on the day when Shazkho nearly pulled out a three-set win in No. 1 singles.
She took the first set over UTA's No. 1 player, Monika Hadvigerova, before Hadvigerova rallied to take the seond set and the tiebreaker (5-7, 7-5, (7)). Shazkho and Enica nearly pulled out their No. 1 doubles point as well, eventually falling in a tiebreaker (8-7 (8)).
The Ladyjacks have a trio of matches on the slate this week, traveling South Texas for matches with UTPA, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA beginning on Wednesday in Edinburg.
