FORT WORTH, Texas - The Lumberjacks outhit No. 16 TCU on through eight innings on Tuesday, but three errors and 10 runners left on base hurt the `Jacks as they fell 10-2 at Lupton Stadium.
SFA (7-14, 2-6 SLC) did not get a runner on base without two outs in an inning until Bo Coffman reached in the eighth on an error by the shortstop, eventually scoring the `Jacks second run. Things stayed within striking distance though, until TCU (14-6, 2-1 MWC) opened things up with a five-run bottom of the eighth.
Sean Meyers and Justin Long both picked up a pair of hits as all but one of the hits the `Jacks recorded came with two outs.
Jared West took the loss, allowing four runs but only two earned and striking out five. However, two walks and two hits were allowed in the first inning.
Greg Holle earned his third win of the year, scattering seven hits over his five innings of work.
SFA had its chances with two outs, but left runners in scoring position in the second and third innings before leaving the bases loaded in the fourth.
The Horned Frogs struck first with an RBI single from Matt Curry, but West was able to minimize the damage by pitching out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout of Matt Vern and a groundout by Bryan Holaday to keep the `Jacks just down 1-0.
Holle retired the first five SFA hitters that he saw before Justin Long started a two-out rally that knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the second. Long shot a double off the left-field wall with two outs, and Joe Staley brought him home two hitters later with a line drive off of the glove of a leaping Taylor Featherston at shortstop.
The third inning saw TCU retake the lead with a pair of singles and an SFA error aiding the cause. A leadoff walk by Matt Carpenter was followed by an error from Brian Ferguson that put Carpenter at third and Chris Ellington at second. Curry then followed with his second RBI of the day with a single to left and Featherston hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Ellington, giving the Frogs a 3-1 lead after three innings.
TCU added another unearned run in the sixth when Holaday doubled in Matt Vern who had reached on a throwing error, but Alex Moshier came on in relief and closed out the inning with no further damage.
SFA then tallied its second run when Jarid Scarafiotti scored Coffman with a sacrifice fly, but then the Horned Frogs offense caught fire in the bottom of the inning off of Chris Court. Five runs and three extra-base hits were capped by a three-run home run to right field by Chis Ellington.
The `Jacks get Wednesday off before traveling to San Marcos for a three-game set with Texas State starting on Friday.
