NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team swept a doubleheader against Jackson State Wednesday evening to improve to 17-14 on the season. The Ladyjacks got strong pitching in both games recording two shutouts, while allowing a total of six hits. SFA recorded a 5-0 win in the first game, and followed that with a 6-0 victory in the second game.
Sophomore pitcher Monika Covington went the distance scattering three hits over seven innings, while striking out 14 batters. Covington was able to pitch out of a jam in the JSU half of the fourth inning. The Lady Tigers had runners at first and third with two out, but Covington recorded one of her 14 strikeouts to get out of the jam.
The Ladyjacks would make their guests pay for not cashing in on the opportunity. The Ladyjacks pushed across three runs in the home half of the fifth. After a leadoff walk, and an error by the Jackson State's Alla Williams put runners on second and third with no one out, SFA's Ashley Struchtemeyer homered to center to give the Ladyjacks a 3-0 advantage. Jackson State didn't threaten the rest of the way as SFA pushed across two insurance runs in the home half of the six innings.
The second game was almost a mirror image of the first, as Lauren Luetge got the victory going seven innings, surrendering three hits and striking out eight. Luetge moved to 6-6 on the season with the win. SFA broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when they pushed across four runs. The Ladyjack put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth when Briana Bishop and Kim Daley hit back-to-back homeruns to hand SFA a 6-0 lead.
Bishop finished the day going 2-for-5 with a homerun and walk, while Daley was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Struchtemeyer finished the night 2-for-6 with three RBIs.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to face the Islanders. The first game of the doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
