NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Both pitching and hitting showed up on Sunday for SFA as the Ladyjacks run-ruled McNeese State in both games of a doubleheader to complete a sweep of the formerly first-place Cowgirls at Hoya Field.
The Ladyjacks (15-14, 7-2 SLC) banged out 15 hits in only five innings in a 9-0, five-inning win in the first game before picking up another dozen hits in the second game for an 8-0, six-inning win. The Cowgirls (12-18, 8-4 SLC) did not manage to score a single run over the course of the entire weekend.
Lauren Luetge was the beneficiary of nine runs in the first game, throwing striking out three in five scoreless innings for her fifth win of the year, while Monika Covington struck out seven and walked only one in the second game for her 10th win of the season.
In game one scored a pair of runs in both the second and third innings to get up 4-0 before exploding for a five-run fourth frame to notch the run-rule win. SFA picked up eight hits in the frame, and it could have been an even bigger inning had the Ladyjacks not been caught twice at home attempting a double-steal.
Six Ladyjacks picked up multiple hits, including Kari Hugie who hit her second home run in as many games. Ashley Struchtmeyer went 2-for-2 as well, driving in a team-best three runs.
The second game saw SFA score four in the second and three more in the third with freshman shortstop Jessica Arana leading the offensive charge with a 4-for-4 game. However Benet Higgs drove in three runs, including a two-run single in the third, with a 2-for-3 day of her own.
SFA continues action on Wednesday at home with a doubleheader against Jackson State before heading to Corpus Christi to play the Islanders next weekend.
