NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks got a career-high 26 points from junior Whitney Cormier to defeat the SLC East leading Northwestern State Lady Demons Wednesday evening at the William R. Johnson Coliseum, 82-64. The Ladyjacks are 11-11 (.500) on the season, and 6-4 (.600) in Southland Conference action.
After trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half the Ladyjacks went into the locker room down, 37-30. All of that changed when SFA stepped back on the court for the second half of action. The Ladyjacks opened the half on a 9-2 run, tying the game at 39 with 15:21 remaining in the contest. SFA would reclaim the lead moments later when sophomore Jordan Ford knocked down a layup.
SFA was relentless on both ends of the floor connecting on 17-of-31 (.548) shots in the second half, while holding Northwestern State to only six field goals, and forcing the Lady Demons into 13 second half turnovers. The Ladyjacks pushed their lead to double digits with 9:15 remaining and never looked back cruising to the 18-point victory.
SFA finished the night 27-of-46 (.435) from the floor, while the Lady Demons were held below 30 percent. Northwestern State knocked down nine three-pointers on the night, but that couldn't make up for their turnovers. The Ladyjacks scored 25 points from Northwestern State's 26 turnovers.
Freshman Schera Sampson had a big night for SFA both offensively and defensively. Sampson scored eight points, pulled down six rebounds and blocked four shots. Ford added 14 points and pulled down five rebounds, while classmate Decreasha Goodner added 11.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they travel to Lake Charles, La., to take on McNeese State. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m., from Burton Coliseum and is a scheduled doubleheader with the SFA men's team.
