HOUSTON, Texas - The Ladyjack bowling team bowled well, and picked up a pair of individual match wins against a bevy of hot teams this weekend at the Lady Tiger Classic.
The two-day tournament saw the Ladyjacks take part in team head-to-head format on Saturday and Baker game format on Sunday. It looked as though it would be a very promising weekend when SFA opened up on Saturday with a 894-875 win over nationally-ranked Southern with Amy Rutherford leading the way with a season-best 196.
But it as a wave of close calls following that win as SFA dropped matches to eventual tournament champion Prairie View A&M, Louisiana Tech and Texas Southern and finished the first day of competition just 1-4 despite finishing the day with the second-highest total pinfall in the field.
Day two opened up with a tough loss to Jackson State, 4-3, in Baker game format before the Ladyjacks picked up their second win of the tournament with a 4-3 decision over Gambling. However, a loss to Southern followed that win and one match later Prairie View A&M stung the Ladyjacks again, despite a spark from Maureen Surkein who came off the bench to fire a pair of strikes in the match. Louisiana Tech then picked up another 4-3 win over SFA in the Ladyjacks' final match of the tournament.
"It was kind of frustrating because I thought we bowled well enough to win much more than we did," head coach Laura Cramer said following the tournament. "It just seemed as though every time we would line up against someone they would bring their best game."
Sierra Gibbons was named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the event after another solid weekend.
SFA will next compete at the Captail City Classic in Jackson, Miss., beginning December 4.
