The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team (6-1/3-0 SLC) will put its six-game win streak on the line against the defending Southland Conference Champion Texas State Bobcats Saturday in San Marcos. The 'Jacks improved to 6-1 on the season, after their impressive 42-3 homecoming win over rival Sam Houston State. The Bobcats are 4-3 overall, and 2-1 in conference play after defeating Northwestern State, 20-17. The Bobcats have rebounded from a two-game skid by winning their last two games. The game is slated to kickoff at 2 p.m. from Bobcat Stadium.
The Lumberjacks trail the all-time series, 53-29-1 (.355), against Texas State. The Lumberjacks head into Saturday's contest looking to end a two-game skid against Bobcats. The 'Jacks have dropped four of the last five meetings in the series, with the lone victory coming on a 24-13 decision in San Marcos during the 2006 season.
The Lumberjacks have won six-straight games since dropping the season opener at SMU. It is the team's longest win streak since winning six games over the 2003 and 2004 seasons. It is the longest streak in a season since the Lumberjacks recorded seven consecutive wins to start the 1995 campaign.
The Lumberjacks impressive 42-3 victory over Sam Houston State guarantees SFA its first winning season since 2004. If the Lumberjacks record one more victory it would assure the team of their most wins since 2003 (7-4).
The Lumberjacks surrendered 186 yards of total offense against Sam Houston State, and only 84 yards through the air. It marks the second time this season that SFA has held an opponent under 300 yards of total offense. It is the fewest passing yards surrendered to an NCAA Division I team since last season (81 at Nicholls), and it is the fewest yards of total offense surrendered against an NCAA D-I school since SFA held Southeastern Louisiana to 176 yards in 2006.
Junior quarterback Jeremy Moses became the school's all-time leader in TD passes with his three scoring strikes at Central Arkansas. He now holds the SFA career marks for completions and touchdown passes, and is second all-time passing yards.
J.C. Harper became the 18th head coach of the SFA Lumberjack football team in December, 2006. Harper spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator before taking over as head coach. He is 10-20 (.333) during his time at SFA. Texas State head coach Brad Wright 16-15 (.516) in his third season with the Bobcats. He is coming off a 2008 campaign where he guided Texas State to a league title and the NCAA playoffs.
