BOSSIER CITY, La. - Laura Cramer's all-freshman group kicked off its first-ever tournament with a 3-1 day at the Bossier City shootout, posting the day's highest score and finishing tied with Louisiana Tech for the tournament lead through the first day of competition.
"I'm extremely happy with the way the girls performed on the first day of the first tournament in the history of the program," Cramer said following the day's action. "It was big for us to get those nerves out and to come out with three wins is really good. I think we kind of gave one back against Grambling in the last game of the day, but three out of four is always a nice day."
The first day of competition consisted of four head-to-head matches with the winner coming by total pinfall. Each bowler bowled a full, 10-frame set in the format.
SFA opened up with a 891-858 win over Louisiana Tech in the first head-to-head game of the day, knocking off a team that had wins over the nation's No. 3 and No. 5 teams last season.
An 880-868 win followed over Prairie View A&M just one game before the Ladyjacks posted the highest pinfall mark of the tournament with 915 pins in a 915-696 thrashing of Alabama State.
Ashli Rosenkrantz and Dustie Hammond each posted standout games against Alabama State, with Rosenkrantz putting together the best game of any Ladyjack with a 218 while Hammond finished with a very solid 210.
However, the Ladyjacks just missed the chance to go a perfect 4-0 in their first day as Grambling took advantage of the Ladyjacks posting their worst match of the day. SFA only managed a 779 pins in the day's final match, while the Tigers had their best match of the day with 798 pins.
The Ladyjacks will get started at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday in the finale of the tournament with Baker game format on the slate.
