NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Former Stephen F. Austin men's head basketball coach Marshall Brown passed away on Wednesday at the age of 90. He was the winningest coach in the history of Lumberjack basketball.
Brown was a native of Whitehouse, Texas, and coached the Lumberjacks from 1959-1978. During his tenure he compiled a record of 345-168, leading the Lumberjacks to five Lone Star Conference titles and five appearances in the NAIA National Tournament.
He was inducted into the SFA Letterman's Hall of Fame in 2003.
Five of his pupils earned All-American honors, while a pair of them - George Johnson and James Silas - went on to have successful careers in the NBA. Silas currently has his number retired by the San Antonio Spurs.
His landmark was 1971-72 when he led SFA to a 31-3 overall record and 17-1 Lone Star Conference mark, on their way to a third-place finish at the NAIA National Tournament. That team scored over 100 points 11 times in 34 games, and the 31 wins still stands as the most wins ever at SFA for a single season.
After graduating from Whitehouse High School, Brown went on to play college basketball at Lon Morris College before transferring to Texas Tech where he graduated in 1940.
Memorial services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Tyler.
