NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team was forced to wait on the elements, but was finally able to play their first scrimmage of preseason camp. The scrimmage, which was originally slated for 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, was pushed back to 7 p.m. at Homer Bryce Stadium.
The delay didn't seem to rattle the SFA offense, which racked up more than 500 yards on the night. Sophomore quarterback Jeremy Moses seemed to have the upperhand over a defense that had looked quite strong in the past couple of days of practice.
Moses completed 23-of-28 (82 percent) passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns. A Baytown Lee product, Moses connected with senior Dominique Edison, junior Duane Brooks and freshman Romonté Hampton for three scoring strikes.
Freshman Neil Warden and Dalton Williams also looked comfortable behind center. Warden completed 21-of-26 (81 percent) passes for 166 yards and one touchdown, while Williams was 17-of-22 (77 percent) for 152 yards, but had one interception.
Edison led the Lumberjack receivers with six catches for 70 yards and the one TD. Redshirt freshman Garret Williams hauled in five passes for 30 yards, while Brooks made three receptions for 53 yards, including scoring strikes of six and 20 yards. Lufkin junior Zek Fancher hauled in the other touchdown grab for the SFA offense.
"Offensively, I think our continuity is getting better," said Harper. "We still need to work on our execution. The important thing is there were no major injuries, and we were able to stay healthy."
The defense was led by sophomore Nolin Loflin who posted five tackles, including four solo stops. Loflin was also credited with one of the 'Jacks' eight sacks. Junior Cory Barlow continues his impressive work recording four tackles, and the squad's lone interception. Freshmen defensive backs Jeremy Barnes and Jarred Hill each added four tackles. The defensive also deflected five passes, recorded 11 tackles for losses and forced a fumble.
"I felt good about both sides of the ball," said SFA head coach J. C. Harper. "But we still have a lot to work to do in all phases of the game. It was nice to be able to run three full teams on the field, after only having two during the spring."
The squad will be in team meetings Wednesday, before returning to the practice field Thursday morning. The workout is scheduled to get under way at 8 a.m. from the SFA practice fields.
