HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Lumberjack baseball team led for the majority of the game, but a four-run inning by Sam Houston was enough to push the Bearkats past SFA 8-5 in the final game of the 2008 season on Saturday.
SFA (25-29, 12-17) led by one run entering the seventh inning, but Sam Houston's (33-23, 18-12) Ryan Weber led off with a walk before five straight `Kats reached with one out to push four runs across and take an 8-5 lead, a lead they would not give back.
Sean Meyers and Justin Roland each had a pair of hits for the `Jacks who ended the year winning nine of their last 12 SLC games for the year, and 11 of their last 15 games overall.
Erik Gregersen tossed 6 1/3 innings, but allowed eight runs and walked six with three strikeouts to take his fourth loss of the year. Nacogdoches native Zac Baker picked up his third win for the `Kats with 3 1/3 shutout innings in relief.
Meyers opened up the scoring in the second with a leadoff home run to right field off of `Kats starter Zach Neal, a solo job that made it 1-0. SFA added two more runs an inning later when Neal threw wildly to third on an attempted double steal for the `Jacks, allowing both Jeff Brewer and Kai Kirby to score.
Seth Hammock took the first pitch he saw from Gregersen deep to left field in the fourth to make it 3-2 on the two-run shot, the first of three multi-run innings the `Kats would have.
Kevin Crabtree walked with two outs in the fifth and after a single from Meyers put him on second, senior Justin Roland singled him home with the first of his two hits on the day.
The sixth inning had SFA go up 5-2 when Kirby tripled into the gap in right-center field to score Matt Whatley from first, but the `Kats answered with two runs of their own in their half of the inning. Sam Houston had runners at second and third with only one out when Ryan Trevino sent what was seemingly just a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Hammock, but Noel Trevino's throw from right field airmailed Roland at third and allowed Nick Zalesski to score after tagging from second.
Then came the seventh, where singles from Keith Stein and Bobby Verbick after Weber's walk loaded the bases with only one out, before Gregersen walked Hammock to tie the game. Erich Lehmann then came on in relief, but promptly hit Zaleski to bring in another run, followed by another single from Trevino. Heath Pugh then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to finish the scoring.
The game was the final game for eight SFA seniors: Lance Luetge, Matt Whatley, Heath Konesheck, Noel Trevino, Kevin Crabtree, Justin Roland, Bruce Mayberry and Jeff Brewer.
