'Jacks Shoot Two-Over 578 at ASU

JONESBORO, Ark. - The freshmen-laden Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team recorded one of its better rounds of the season Monday afternoon in the opening day of the ASU Indian Classic hosted by Arkansas State. The Lumberjacks shot an opening-round four-over par 292, and followed that up with a two-under 286 in the second round from Sage Meadows Golf Club. Despite the 'Jacks' strong day, low scores seemed to be par for the course as SFA finished the day 15th overall heading into Tuesday's final round of action.
The 'Jacks had two athletes shoot under par Monday led by freshman Kyle Robbins. The Southlake, Texas, product shot a 72-69 - 141 to finish the day three-under par. He is currently tied for 30th overall.
Sophomore Ricky Wilkenfeld is only two strokes back of Robbins' pace after shooting a one-under 143. Wilkenfeld is currently tied for 40th heading into the final round. Freshman Jacob Taylor shot a three-over 75 in the first round, but battled back to record a 72 in the second round. Taylor is currently tied for 70th overall with a three-over par 147.
Two 'Jacks finished the day tied for 79th with a 149. Freshman Michael Smith shot a four-over 76 in the opening round, but was able to cut three strokes off his score in the second round of action. Sophomore Matt Oates finished the day by recording a 74-75 - 149. The pair enters Tuesday's final round tied for 79th overall.
For the day, SFA recorded five rounds of even par or lower, and had only one round higher than 75. The Lumberjacks will look to climb the ladder in the final round of the ASU Indian Classic Tuesday morning beginning at 8.
