CONWAY, Ark. - Jeremy Cloud pitched 8.2 innings for Central Arkansas as the Bears never trailed and knocked off SFA 5-2 at UCA Field on Friday.
Cloud picked up his first win for UCA (13-17, 3-7) while the `Jacks (11-16, 1-8) have now lost their last five, including 11 of their last 14. Erik Gregersen had career bests with his seven-inning and six-strikeout performance.
UCA took advantage of a leadoff walk in the first inning as Kent Davis drove in Payton Seelinger with an RBI single, and Cloud blanked the `Jacks for the first seven innings of the game before finishing with five strikeouts and just missing his fifth career complete game.
The Bears plated three more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0, and got a run in the eighth on four consecutive walks by three Lumberjack pitchers before Bruce Mayberry struck out the next three Bears to leave the bases loaded.
Kai Kirby finished with two hits, a double and a triple, and scored the first `Jacks run in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Zach Gardner. SFA got another run back in the top of the ninth, but Matt Humphrey came on to get the final out of the game and record his first save of the year.
Kirby, along with Kevin Croft and Sean Meyers each finished with multiple hits as SFA out-hit the Bears 8-5 on the evening.
SFA and UCA play game two of the series on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. start time slated. The game can be heard live on KSFA 860AM.
