SHREVEPORT, La. - Stephen F. Austin took a one-hit shutout into the fifth inning, but Centenary got an RBI double in the bottom half and held on to take a 1-0 win over the Ladyjacks Wednesday.
Each team used the mid-week, non-conference game to work its rotation, throwing three different pitchers. SFA started junior Kari Hugie, who gave way to freshman Monika Covington for the third and fourth innings. The duo combined for just one hit and didn't allow a runner past first base.
Junior Debra Boles took the hard-luck loss. While she was touched for three hits in the final two innings, Centenary did its scoring in a one-hit inning. The Ladies led off with a walk, then scored the game's only run when Allison McClain -- who had reached on a fielder's choice -- scored all the way from first on a double down the left-field line by Jennifer Martin.
At the plate, the Ladyjacks could must just four hits, all singles, and only got two runners into scoring position. Freshman Ashley Struchtemeyer went 2-for-3, and Hugie provided the other SFA base knock.
With the loss, Boles moved to 1-1 on the season.
The Ladyjacks (23-15, 10-4 Southland Conference) will return to SLC play this weekend, when they travel to Conway, Ark., for a three-game series against Central Arkansas.
